Sooner Women’s Gymnasts Strive to go One Better

Posted on January 10, 2014

.200 was the difference between 1st and 2nd, the difference between that first elusive National Title for the Sooners. Last season, at the NCAA Championship in Los Angeles, the Sooners put their hearts on the line, gave it their all and left nothing to be questioned. It wasn’t quite enough to beat a Florida team who squeezed past the Sooners by .200, 197.375 to 197.575. This was the 3rd top 4 finish in the last 4 seasons and the closest to clinching the big prize. Is this the year that KJ, Tom, Lou and the girls can final bring home what so many Sooners have fought for, the National Championship? Nothing is a given in gymnastics, the physical and mental demands are great and millimetres can be the difference between sticking a landing for Victory or falling and defeat…. Gymnastics really is not a sport for the weak.

2nd Place 2013 National Championship

With 3 talented and highly acclaimed Senior gymnasts leaving in Lauren Smith, Kayla Nowak and Brie Olsen, KJ had another highly successful recruiting class and welcomed 5 Freshman to the team Chayse Capps, Kara Loven, Reagan Hemry, Charity Jones and McKenzie Wofford. With the state of the art Sam Viersen centre to train in, an incredible home advantage of 60 wins to 3 losses at the Lloyd Noble Centre, an incredible coaching staff and the bonus of becoming a Sooner, its not a surprise Norman is a hot ticket.

So what can we look forward to in 2014? More of the same really. Dominating performances at home, a talented squad amongst the top few teams in the country and also supporting a team that always puts 110% in. Being fortunate to see practices on a few occasional when visiting, I can tell you now, not many people can understand the physical condition these athletes are in. I bet 98% of people couldn’t complete the “warm up” that’s these ladies do let alone the several hour training session! I hope, I wish, I dream that they can go one better this year and bring home that National Title, its the one thing missing from Norman. The talent is there, the skill, the want, the willing and everything else required is there. All the pieces are in place, but Gymnastics is an unforgiving sport. You don’t bring your A game, it won’t give you an inch. I truly believe they will be there, in the big dance! Once they are there, with a little Sooner Magic, anything is possible!

It all starts tonight in Norman. 6:45 at the Lloyd Noble Centre when OUr #3 ranked Sooners face SEC opposition in #8 Georgia Bulldogs. In last years season opener, they went and got the Win at their house so Georgia will be out for revenge and to try and spoil the party. I urge you all to get down and support this team. You will be amazed, you will be blown away by the spectacular routines performed before your eyes. And if nothing else more, they have always been so accommodating to me and I know they really do appreciate everyone who comes to support them. Get down to the Lloyd Noble Centre and try something new, lets get behind this team on their quest to bring more glory and championships to Norman.
